Review of Hirings and Layoffs – January 2018

Here is a summary of companies where jobs were created and others were lost during January 2018.

HIRINGS

1. The opening of the first Village des Valeurs store in Sherbrooke has led to creation of more than 60 jobs, half of them full time. It is the 17th store of this popular chain which offers second-hand items in good condition at low prices.

2. Also in Estrie, the rubber floor coverings found in schools, hospitals and CPEs are a thriving market: American Biltrite is investing $11 million in its Sherbrooke plant, resulting in the creation of some 30 new jobs.

3. The Ontario automobile manufacturer Linamar is benefiting from an investment by the Canadian government of $49 million, which will let it create 1,500 jobs and protect 8,000 others in Guelph. Thanks to this boost, the company will be able to develop its services and improve its equipment.

4. In Ontario, the automobile sector is definitely in good shape with government investments: Lakeside Plastics, a plant near Windsor, is one of 11 companies to benefit from $41 million granted by Ottawa to develop automobile technologies. The plant will be able to hire 60 people.

5. In Saint-Tite, Xylo-Carbone has a similar opportunity: the government of Quebec is granting it financial assistance of close to $2.4 million, which will allow the plant that produces bio-char to accelerate its development.

LAYOFFS

1. Sad announcement for Montreal’s sweet tooths: the Pâtisserie de Gascogne has declared bankruptcy and is closing its doors after being in business for 60 years. As a result, 175 employees will lose their jobs in the shops and production plant.

2. The media world is decidedly living in dark times, and not only in print: CIBL Community Radio has laid off all its salaried and volunteer employees this month due to financial difficulties.

3. Who still looks in the Yellow Pages to find a company’s address or phone number? Not many people, if we are to believe the dismissal of one employee out of five in the company that is struggling to move into the digital age. 500 people will soon swell the ranks of unemployed Canadians.

4. Things aren’t going well for the GCR garages. The American brand, a Bridgestone tire retailer, has announced the closing of 17 of its 48 Canadian centres, including fifteen in Quebec, leading to the elimination of about 130 jobs across the country.

5. Nearly sixty people are losing their jobs as a result of the closure of the Ledvance fluorescent lamp manufacturing plant in Drummondville. The Chinese owners are adjusting their workforce according to a declining market.
