The environment more important than people with disabilities

According to a poll released by the Job Opportunity Information Network (JOIN), Canadians believe the environment is more of a priority for Canadian companies than people with disabilities. Just over one quarter (27%) of employees thought that companies were putting the most effort into the environment, vs 16% who said that companies were focusing on accommodating customers and employees with disabilities.

Susan Howatt, Chairperson, JOIN Toronto Region Board of Governors, says that of course the environment should be preserved for the benefit of all Canadians, but that one of the greatest challenges facing the country is the shortage of skilled workers and people with disabilities should be given the opportunity to contribute. “People with disabilities represent the greatest untapped human resource pool in Canada,” she explained.

The poll was released at JOIN’s annual conference, in partnership with COMPAS Research. It was conducted on a random sample of 620 Canadians.
