Nearly four in ten firms not having a Christmas party

With many companies still facing tough times, Christmas parties could be a workplace casualty this year.

According to a survey by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) of 650 Canadians, 39% of companies will not be having a Christmas party this year, with the unfavourable economic context once again affecting festivities. Of those who usually do have a celebration, over half (56%) would be understanding if this year’s office holiday party were scaled back or cancelled due to economic concerns, while 19% would be disappointed to pass on this tradition.

The impact of a party on morale should not be underestimated, since it is a way to recognize hard work and thank employees for a job well done during the year. Quebecers are the most likely to continue the tradition, with 64% having a work party this year, compared to a lower likelihood in Ontario (56%), Alberta (50%) and the Atlantic provinces (47%).

Hints and tips
A second survey of 862 HR professionals by HRPA and Canadian HR Reporter found that most managers (81%) think that Christmas celebrations are important for morale, and 43% would be disappointed if the party were cancelled for budget reasons. Solutions exist for companies finding it difficult to organize a party this year. Among the most popular tips for hosting a party in tough times: shop around for less expensive venues and entertainment, be creative and host your party on company premises and cut down on the guest list by inviting invite employees only. Since year-end celebrations are a key time for strengthening team cohesion, it would be a pity to miss out on it.
