Unequal wage increases across Canada

While the national average for salary increases in 2013 are 3%, Alberta and Saskatchewan expect increases of around 4%, according to a recent survey conducted by the Conference Board of Canada. The increase in earnings in these provinces relates specifically to the oil and gas industry, a sector in which employers continue to face a shortage of skilled labour. Salary projections are less optimistic for Quebec (2.7%), Ontario (2.5%) and British Columbia (2.5%), where employers are more likely to feel the effect of the economic downturn. Finally, the survey, conducted among 240 employers across the country, reveals that two thirds of respondents think that economic conditions in 2013 will be comparable to those of 2012. One quarter of them foresee improvement for their business and only 7% a deterioration.
