Random draw at Peugeot: a car to reward work attendance

A draw organized to reward attendance at work is an original initiative launched in the Hordain plant (in the north of France), where Peugeot Citroen and Fiat minivans are assembled. The draw has drawn the ire of unions and embarrassed management. The plant’s manager has set aside a reward for the 766 employees (out of 2,755) deemed to be the most conscientious, i.e. those who have had zero absences over the past three years: first a 100-euro bonus, then the right to participate in the draw. auto as a reward for attendanceThe first prize is a Peugeot Tepee, a family minivan derived from a utilility vehicle valued at 26,000 euros.

“This is a scandous and discriminatory measure,“ said the CFDT union representative indignantly. “You cannot take advantage of people’s poor health and penalize them twice!”

PSA Peugeot Citroen management disowned this initiative: “It is an unfortunate, purely local initiative,” said a company spokesperson. “It will be neither incorporated into the company’s social policy, nor extended to other sites or subsidiaries.”

Hordain’s raffle will undoubtedly not be repeated. However, the company’s employees are used to being rewarded for their regular attendance on the production line. “It is not unusual to see managers give out free movie or soccer game tickets,” said Christian Hourte, the central CFDT union representative. “Some try to distribute them equally, while others use them as little gifts to fight absenteeism.”
