Lululemon, the Most Popular Workplace, Connected to the Office During Summer Vacations, No Advices from Superior, Weekly Salary

Lululemon, the most popular workplace for students
According to LinkedIn, Lululemon Athletica is the most popular midsize company in Canada in students’ eyes. The Vancouver based company, specializing in manufacture of yoga clothing, has built a strong corporate culture. Last year, its president, Christine Day, also received the title of CEO of the Year by the “Report on Business” magazine to acknowledge her ability to create a link between the brand and its followers. Other midsize companies valued by students include Ubisoft, Facebook, Holt Renfrew, Cossette, Aritzia, Labatt, Nexen, Mosaic and CBC. To arrive at this conclusion, LinkedIn tracked the activities of students on the professional network based on different criteria: their behaviour when searching for employment, the companies they follow and their visits to company pages and member profiles.

More than 3 executives out of 5 connected to the office during summer vacations
It’s difficult for executives to leave it all behind them during their vacations. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the Robert Half firm. 61% out of 270 Financial Officers interviewed said that they will get news from the office once or twice a week during their vacations. This is an upward trend, since for a similar study in 2005 it was 58%. On the other hand, 36% responded that they stay completely disconnected. This is what the firm advises. Even a short pause gives executives the opportunity to recharge their batteries. Staying disconnected also lets all employees avoid feeling guilty for not getting news while they are on vacation.

One third of employees never receive advice from their superior
Canadian employers would benefit from becoming better advisors, according to the Robert Half firm. While office workers say that career counselling would help them improve their work performance (82%), motivation (63%) and overall satisfaction (87%), only 53% believe their manager is effective in this area. 31% of 500 employees surveyed say that they have never received even a single piece of advice from their superior and 24% only receive advice once a year. According to respondents, qualities of a good career coach include mutual confidence and respect as well as knowledge and expertise.

Averaged weekly pay up 3.1%
In April, the average weekly pay of Canadian non-farm workers increased 3.1% compared to last year, to reach $896.63, according to Statistics Canada. In Quebec, earnings rose 3.3% in April to reach $818.43. This increase is explained by a certain number of factors including wage growth, changes in employment composition by industry, profession and work experience, and the increase in number of hours worked per week (33 hours on average). Salary increases were most significant in wholesaling, construction and the retail trade. However, earnings declined in the health care and social assistance sectors.
