Indeed buys Workopolis

One of the main Canadian job search sites, Workopolis, will be absorbed by its main competitor, Indeed. The Japanese group Recruit Holdings, which already owns Indeed, has announced that in the next few weeks it will conclude acquisition of the Workopolis.com website. Workopolis will then be integrated into the Indeed network.

The transaction should consolidate the position of Indeed as leader in the online job market in Canada. Present in more than 60 countries and in 28 languages, Indeed presents itself as the world’s leading job search site. Recruit Holdings purchased Indeed in 2012.

Since its inception in 2000, Workopolis.com was one of the main Canadian sites for online job advertisements. Based in Toronto, Workopolis has offices in eight Canadian cities. Until recently, the company was owned jointly by Torstar, owner of the Toronto Star, and a subsidiary of Power Corporation, owner of La Presse.

In recent years, Indeed’s growth in Canada overshadowed Workopolis. In March 2018, according to SimilarWeb data, the site ca.indeed.com attracted 26.7 million visits, compared to 3.3 million for Workopolis, and visitors spent twice as long and viewed three times as many pages on ca.indeed.com as on workopolis.com.

Workopolis is nonetheless a choice catch for Indeed. “Workopolis is a trusted brand and leading Canadian job site for both job seekers and employers,” says Hisayuki Idekoba, COO of Recruit and CEO of Indeed, in the press release announcing the transaction. “With millions of loyal users that rely on the site, this acquisition allows us to expand our commitment to providing Canadian job seekers with a superior job search experience.”

Integration with Indeed will likely be a major change for Workopolis. Users who have uplinked their CV to the workopolis.com site have already been notified that their CV will no longer be accessible on this site after April 11.

Based in Tokyo, the  Recruit group is present in technologies related to human resources, in recruitment and in advertising media. It has more than 45,000 employees worldwide.
