62% of overworked, unrewarded employees take their revenge

Employers take note! If your employees are working longer hours than normal but are not rewarded for their extra effort, they will seek to “reward” themselves during work hours.

A recent Time & Attendance Poll poll conducted by ADP Canada, the employer services company, revealed the truth of “An honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work”; according to the results, 62% of employees who do unpaid overtime will arrange to “recover” this time at the employer’s expense.

Most will leave work early (53%), 27% will work at a more leisurely pace, 23% will take sick days when they are not sick, 21% will take longer lunch breaks and 16% will arrive late!

Clearly, employee motivation is directly affected, and indirectly their productivity and involvement in the company.

Furthermore, many Canadians are affected by this phenomenon, since the poll shows that 21% are working longer hours a week; of these, four out of ten workers (37%) do not get additional compensation or time off.

Conversely, those in Ontario are least likely to obtain extra compensation (21%). Finally, employees in the Maritimes are most likely to get additional time off (21%).
