Official fired for snoozing

Jiang Wenhui paid a heavy price for not being to keep his eyes open. . .

Jiang Wenhui, a Chinese Communist official, was asked to resign after dozing off in the front row of an official meeting on economic development zones. Awoken by the head of the Communist party of Yunnan province himself, Wenhui stepped down from his position as deputy director of the Chenggong County Investment Promotion Bureau.

"It is he who needs to take notes at the investment lecture, but his dozing only showed he was not interested in his own job,"said one poster on Internet portal Sina Corp. Chenggong county head Wu Qingkun acknowledged that some officials are sluggish, i.e. indifferent with respect to their work. He added that he hoped the situation would serve as a example to inspire Wenhui's ex-colleagues to shape up. Many Chinese debated the issue online: "Does anyone think that an official who is not interested in his work should keep his job?" asks one participant. Other posters defended Wenhui: "Maybe the lecture was too dull," one wrote. "Speakers at many meetings just say big and empty words. It is no wonder that listeners sleep," said another person.
