The team:

Working with various Global Technology Solutions’ (GTS) / CIO stakeholders, Scotiabank’s GTS Engineering will provide detailed design, build, pilot, productization, and level 3 / escalation support on key infrastructure services across the enterprise, following infrastructure patterns, frameworks, and standards from Architecture. It also drives major programs that provides more efficient use of globally infrastructure / products, enabling innovation and NexGen platforms within the enterprise.

    The role:
    Reporting to the Chief Enterprise Infrastructure Services Engineer, you will play a critical part in reducing overall costs of the mainframe infrastructure and optimizing user response times and improving system stability.

    Is this role right for you?
  • You will have the lead on reducing mainframe costs and improving reliability from a technical perspective
  • You will interact with the top Subject Matter Experts from development, support and operations to solve performance and production issues
  • You will provide advise on project development and infrastructure changes regarding their impact to mainframe performance and stability.
  • You will monitor and analyze resource utilization to determine reasons for any significant change and identify tuning or design changes that will reduce costs. Together with the infrastructure support team you will determine future capacity requirements.
  • You will become proficient with system and database monitoring tools and statistics reporting to be able to find cause of issues. This would include application profiling and network traffic.
  • You will review and verify root cause of production problems and in some cases will provide the expertise to determine the root cause. In some cases, you maybe required to assist production support with resolving production problems.
  • You will review Non-Functional Test plans and results for projects having significant impact on the mainframe. You will have signoff responsibility regarding performance. This will include the interface with the mainframe to prevent applications flooding the mainframe or ensuring the minimal impacted by other applications having issues.
  • When required, be a part of after-hours production issue resolution in the evenings or weekends.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?

  • You have at least 10+ years of hands-on technical working experience with mainframe development and/or mainframe system software support.
  • You have at least 5+ years of hands-on technical working experience with IMS & CICS.
  • You have at least 5+ years of hands-on technical working experience with DB2 or any other relational database.
  • You have at least 5+ years of hands-on technical working experience with production application or systems support.
  • You have experience with performance and tuning on mainframe or another platform (e.g., mid-range, UNIX, Windows, Linux).
  • You understand the impact of communication protocols, connection pools and thread pools on the end to end response and reliability.
  • You can demonstrate broad and deep problem-solving skills to enable the ability to determine the root cause of a production issue or performance problem.
  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
