Position: Middle School Teacher and Coach for PHE/ Athletics

Terms: Temporary, Full-Time - Maternity Leave Contract

Reports to: Principal of Middle School & Director of Athletics


Role Description:

This is a one-year leave replacement position for the 2024-25 school year.

As a member of our Middle School Physical Health Education (PHE) Life Skills teaching team, you will teach a range of IB MYP PHE courses in Grades 6-10, and participate in the delivery of our Middle School Life Skills curriculum in Grades 6-9.

Members of our PHE team are expected to coach multiple teams in co-curricular athletics, ideally in at least three of the core sports of badminton, rugby, basketball, soccer and volleyball.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach multiple PHE classes in the IB Middle Years Programme (G6-10)
  • Coach up to two teams per term in at least three of the core sports of badminton, rugby, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Coaching will take place before and/or after school, including evenings and some weekends
  • Connect with and inspire students to excel in Physical Health Education and Athletics
  • Serve as a Homeroom Advisor for a group of approximately 12 Middle School students
  • Teach classes in our Middle School Life Skills programme as needed
  • Offer engaging elective courses through our Middle School LEAP (Learning Enrichment and Personalization) programme


Additional Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Keep up to date with developments in subject and co-curricular areas, including coaching qualifications, athletic training and sport management
  • Establish strong, positive relationships with students while fostering a healthy environment for active living and sport
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting
  • Organise and assist with tournaments and the planning of Athletics events
  • Provide assistance with administrative tasks in Athletics and PHE
  • Help plan and lead our annual Terry Fox Run and Battle of the Houses events


All Mulgrave teachers are expected to:


  • Develop a classroom environment that builds positive relationships and fosters an ethic of care
  • Design, prepare and deliver learning activities that facilitate authentic engagement
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying learning needs
  • Use relevant technology to enhance instruction and learning
  • Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting
  • Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events
  • Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues and parents
  • Attend professional development workshops as required by the school
  • Endorse the school's mission, values and vision statement


Required Qualifications:


  • Must be a Canadian resident and legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Certified to teach in BC
  • Minimum one year teaching experience
  • An age-appropriate First Aid Certificate


The ideal candidate will have:


  • Advanced qualifications for coaching, including appropriate NCCP certification, in at least one of our core sports - badminton, rugby, basketball, soccer, and volleyball
  • Demonstrated understanding of and passion for Physical Health Education, coaching, and the Teaching Games for Understanding framework (TGFU)
  • A familiarity with BC PHE curricula
  • Knowledge and understanding of the IB Middle Years Programme
  • A Class IV driver's licence
  • Experience teaching in a technology-rich environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong organisational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills


The base annual salary for this position is competitive and falls within the range of $70,000.00 - $119,000.00. The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, and relevant experience in accordance with BC labour laws and company policies.
