Detailed Overview

Participates as a member of the health care team and assists designated clients with established rehabilitative therapeutic activities in the extended care Unit and transition care management as directed by the Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist.
Responsibilities

  1. Performs client specific delegated tasks according to treatment plan in the areas of physical, function and leisure skills including mobility and strengthening exercises, range of motion and walking, as well as the proper use of walking aids and braces.
  2. Assists clients in dressing and personal care as required in preparation for and following rehabilitative treatment and/or leisure activities. Assists with client lifting/transfers and positioning as directed.
  3. Fabricates adaptive devices such as splints, slings, collars, heels, heel lifts and wheelchair cushions by cutting out material, sewing items, assembling parts, adding straps and making alterations as required.
  4. Prepares items and equipment such as hotpacks and icepacks, wax baths and hydrotherapy equipment for treatment as directed by the therapist.
  5. Reports observations of client behaviour and progress and/or changes to the clients' condition to the physiotherapist or other member of the interdisciplinary care team.
  6. Sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for related activities as directed. Cleans and maintains equipment and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate staff.
  7. Maintains established inventory of equipment, devices and materials.
  8. Maintains related records and workload statistics.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
