The School of Health and Public Safety at SAIT prepares students for a dynamic career in the health care sector. We offer specialized training in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, professional assistant programs, information management, and training for wellness professionals. Our programs are hands on, with students and instructors immersed in living classrooms and simulated training.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Health and Public Safety, the Academic Chair of the Health Information and Practice Assistants portfolio is a representative of SAIT management at the program level and portfolio level, managing faculty and staff and will be responsible for hiring, training & development, discipline, and termination decisions of assigned staff. This position will also require the incumbent to represent management in responding to grievances and contributing to management bargaining proposals. In addition, this position also manages program resources.

The Role

    • Student Success - 15%
    • Drive sustainability and increase accessibility to education through the attraction and retention of students to their program(s)
    • Support students through their lifecycle at SAIT - enrollment to graduation
    • Work with students and SAIT resources to ensure successful completion and graduate employment rates
    • Understand and leverage the benefits of a diverse student population
    • Support the creation of an engaging environment that optimizes learning for students and that allows for a satisfying student experience
    • Support learner satisfaction and be proactive in identifying learner challenges and determining appropriate mediation actions

    • Faculty Leadership and Management - 35%
    • Attract, recruit and engage the best faculty talent to deliver curriculum through a variety of medium
    • Ensure academic excellence (teaching, scholarly activity, pedagogy knowledge) through coaching, mentoring and developing instructors
    • Set clear expectations with instructors through the performance management process, hold instructors accountable for delivering on objectives and recognize and reward performance
    • Understand the collective agreement and management of a unionized workforce
    • Build an engaged team environment to deliver program excellence
    • Manage conflict in a constructive manner
    • Develop and maintain a respectful workplace
    • Ensure program renewal is a continuous process and hold faculty accountable for delivering it
    • Product Quality
    • Ensure relevant and high quality curriculum and programs through the curriculum development and renewal processes
    • Manage and improve program quality through the use of SAIT's quality assurance and continuous improvement processes and implement action plans for improvement and enhancement
    • Work as a team across the schools and with curriculum renewal consultants (i.e. CAEI) to support curriculum standardization where applicable
    • Assess the delivery of curriculum through a number of medium and options
    • Ensure programs meet all guidelines and that credential levels are appropriate
    • Maintain program accreditation and recognition as required
    • Support and promote applied research activities wherever possible (innovation)

    • Industry Relations and Partnerships - 15%
    • Work with external stakeholders (i.e. industry partners, associations and the community) and SAIT support resources (Marketing, Business Intelligence & Analysis, Corporate Engagement etc.) to collect and analyze industry information/data so that program decisions are meaningful
    • Develop and sustain effective, well-functioning Program Advisory Committees to support and advise key SAIT programs
    • Develop and proactively maintain meaningful relationships with key external stakeholders including government, accreditation bodies and industry
    • Create and support meaningful industry connections for students to enhance graduate employment
    • Work with appropriate internal resources to support and facilitate development opportunities (government advocacy and community philanthropy)
    • Represent SAIT and students to deliver on the SAIT brand

    • Operational Excellence - 35%
    • Collaborate within schools and across the organization to leverage the most from all resources
    • Manage budgets, forecasting, data and reports and leverage administrative and other support resources to work effectively and efficiently
    • Demonstrate operational excellence including supporting and working within standardized processes and procedures
    • Work to continuously improve the way we work at SAIT to achieve business and education outcomes
    • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a safe environment for students, staff and SAIT community
    • Ensure facility and equipment are maintained to provide an engaging learning environment that supports program learning outcomes

Qualifications & Experience

    • Minimum of an undergraduate degree and diploma in allied health or related health care field. A graduate degree in management, education or health is ideal. A combination of education and experience may be considered
    • Minimum of five years experience in relevant field. Knowledge and experience as a healthcare or medical professional is critical to the position
    • Minimum of three years of managerial experience in a health or business environment
    • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in leading/teaching or curriculum design at a post-secondary level
    • Experience in health discipline similar to programming in the portfolio
    • Demonstrate a good understanding of quality assurance and control in Education
