Job Description

Summary:

Provide technical health, safety and environmental support to the Whitby Region Operation, One Ontario, Project Management and Pharmaceutical Development Services (PDS) Groups. Implements programs to ensure compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable Regulations (ie: WHMIS, Reg. 851, Designated Substance Regulations, Construction Regulations etc.), the Ontario Environmental Protection Act, the Ontario Water Resource Act (OWRA) and applicable Regulations (ie: Reg. 127, 346, 347), City and Regional By-Laws, and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and applicable Regulations (ie: NPRI, NSNR, TDGA). Manages the Environment, Health and Safety department and provide guidance and coaching to the department.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage EHS Department at WRO
  • Provide technical EHS support and leadership to Processing, PPT, Project Management, One Ontario and the PDS Lab and Site objectives.
  • Manage EHS Programs and Procedures – development and implementation to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Manage EHS Training Program – development and implementation
  • Manage Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • Lead Emergency Response Plan and act as Emergency Coordinator
  • Manage Environment program – ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Coach and mentor members of the EHS Department
  • Develop Best Practice Programs
  • Report Metrics to Corporate and Site Leadership Team
  • Provide resources and assistance to corporate (as required)
  • Select, develop and evaluate colleagues to ensure the efficient operation of the function. Work with and advise colleagues on administrative policies and procedures.
  • Promote a safe working environment, report potential hazards and ensure all direct reports follow Environmental Health and Safety procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

EHS Certificate or Diploma

CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional)

Master of Health Science (M.H.Sc) or Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Occupational / Environmental Hygiene an asset

Working towards Certified Industrial Hygienist an asset

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of previous related experience and specialized knowledge related to environment, health and safety, WSIB, industrial hygiene, managing people etc.


Equivalency:

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Well versed in provincial health and safety legislation and environmental legislation. Proven ability to coach and develop staff as well as the technical ability to coordinate departmental business activities. Strong computer and database skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, leadership, motivation and organization skills. Strong presentation skills. Able to work in a fast-pace environment. High integrity for dealing with confidential information. Demonstrated professionalism. Has a mindset for practical systems that add value. Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficiency with the English Language.

Follow all Environmental Health & Safety Policies and Procedures. Work harmoniously with fellow team members, modelling positive team principles and partnering to meet project and departmental objectives. Carry out all duties within strict compliance to Patheon quality systems SOP's and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion.  Actively engage in and adhere to departmental systems in order to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines of deliverables in a proactive manner.  Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge in related field.
