Unity Health Toronto is embarking on a multi-year digital, clinical transformation project to implement a new electronic patient record solution across all sites. The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) project is a pillar of enabling exemplary patient experience and quality of care and therefore see this not as an information technology initiative, but as one founded in clinical transformation and care redesign.

Job Profile:
The EPR principal trainer role will be responsible for the development and implementation of the EPR specific modules content. The role is one that bridges technology, clinical workflows and practice in the delivery of education to all end users across the organizations. The role requires knowledge and expertise in educational processes including curriculum development, delivery of education in various modalities and evaluation methodologies. The role sits within the EPR governance structure and has a mandate to develop, provide and maintain an educational program that meets the clinical and non-clinical needs to effectively and efficiently use the EPR in the management of all aspects of patient care.

Main Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and End User Training

  • Develops the training requirements for end users of the EPR, including all clinical, non-clinical staff and learners using creative and forward thinking approaches to meeting the educational needs of the various stakeholders;
  • Provides leadership in the development of the modular curriculum that addresses the clinical workflows to ensure a safe transition to the new EPR;
  • Collaborates/engages with Leaders/Clinicians/End Users, Information Technology (IT) peers and vendor professionals to incorporate safe and best practices, as well as professional and practice standards are incorporated in the curriculum;
  • Assesses the skills of individuals/groups and provides skill enhancement training as needed;
  • Provides education and training for various end user groups on how to use the clinical system to facilitate clinical work flow.

Facilitates Strategy/Content Development

  • Supports the learning strategies and appropriate educational methodology for optimal/ appropriate learning for end users
  • Develops and/or facilitates the development of content with a goal of Clinicians/students and other relevant Users meeting established objectives
  • Plans/develops appropriate curriculum (ie for other system educator needed at the time of go-live for all aspect of the system.
  • Utilizes:
    • Knowledge of how to use the back end of the system;
    • Understanding of how to build a clinical record;
    • And translating what has been built to facilitate Clinicians understanding of the system;

Provides Ongoing Evaluation, Testing and Revision of Work Flows

  • Provides timely access to the system to facilitate the evaluation process for users/students;
  • Monitors the use of the system by users/students to ensure users/students are using the system, in an efficient, effective and appropriate manner;
  • Identifies system knowledge level of users/students to appropriately provide assistance and facilitate training activities.
  • Assesses the relevant characteristics of workflow, practice changes and learning needs of various the stakeholders;
  • Reviews/evaluates classroom instructions, as required to determine if adjustment to learning, program and process are required to ensure optimal learning for students;
  • Takes remedial action, including implement new solutions to rectify any issues, in a timely manner to ensure correct workflow/facilitate the learning process.

Participation in Meetings

  • Attends and actively participates in meetings related to the system, on a weekly basis, to gain/maintain understanding of what need to be updated and/or captured in the system, to maintain updated knowledge on work flow; to identify contractual obligations, to network, etc.;
  • Attends the nursing network committee meeting, as per established scheduled, on a monthly basis to gain understanding of upcoming corporate educational programs and to share clinical system educational programs;
  • Develops, maintains and updates policies and procedures related to training.


Qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized Bachelor's degree in a related health care field. Master's degree program e.g., Health Informatics, Nursing, Health Administration, Education preferred.
  • EpicCare Ambulatory PT Certification is preferred.
  • Three (3) years experience in developing curriculum and training programs for clinical end users.
  • Three (3) years recent clinical experience preferred.
  • Related experience with providing adult education in a health care setting with a demonstrated personal commitment to continuing education and learning required;
  • Valid passport and ability to travel to the United States of America to complete mandatory vendor training certification program required
  • Successful completion of the vendor training certification program is a requirement for continued employment in this role.
  • Experience in providing consultative services for application systems, as well as managing a positive customer relationship with Clinicians and project teams required; must be well informed on the use of EPR;
  • Proven leadership capabilities in a team environment required;
  • Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to provide positive/constructive feedback in situational learning required;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a self-directed/organized manner, with a willingness to take on additional responsibilities in a multitasking environment required;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and facilitation/presentation skills required, with knowledge of Standards of Care an asset;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, strong organizational skills coupled with well-developed written and verbal communication skills required;
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills to facilitate accomplishing assigned work deliverables in a dynamic climate of competing demands required;
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with computer applications in a Windows environment, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, computerized calendar and the internet required;
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and facilitate change and innovation required;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage relationship across diverse stakeholder groups is essential;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced/multi-disciplinary environment and prioritize through utilization of strong organizational and time management skills required;
  • Ability to work flexible hours in response to project requirements.
