We are looking for a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Advisor to contribute to the success of our Calciner operation. The HSE Advisor performs multiple HSE functions to ensure the efficient and effective implementation of Rio Tinto's Health, Safety and Environment Programmes and compliance with regulations. In addition to their HSE primary duties (85%), the Advisor provides support and relief to the Logistics Coordinator (15%), who is responsible for assuring stable flow of railcars, at origin, in transit and at destination.

Reporting to the Plant General Manager and working a Monday to Friday schedule, you'll also assume on-call responsibilities for one weekend per month, and performing the following duties:

  • Collaborating with the Operation's Supervisor to manage compliance with Rio Tinto and legislative Health& Safety policies, and providing related reports
  • Coordinating and delivering activities including hazard/risk management, health and wellbeing initiatives, safety committee meetings, health and safety monitoring, and the analysis and coordination of all HSE training
  • Overseeing the Industrial Hygiene programs and improvement plans for compliance, and ensuring compliance with medical surveillance programs
  • Overseeing the Critical Risk Management programs for the facility, including providing coaching to others on verifications and risk assessments.
  • Developing and arranging audit and inspection plans; training to employees to raise awareness of Health & Safety standards and programs.
  • Developing and maintaining management systems for contractors from a Health & Safety perspective.
  • Leading Health and Safety investigations, remedial plans, and continuous improvement opportunities
  • Reviewing Emergency Response Plans annually, including the coordination of drills and table-top exercises with responders
  • Performing logistical responsibilities, including:
    • Providing relief coverage for the Logistics Coordinator
    • Developing a working knowledge of supply chain and distribution network.
    • Assuring a stable flow of railcars, at origin, in transit, and at destination, and communicating escalations as required
    • Determining and reacting to out of balance conditions, identifying alternatives, and recommending corrective actions.
    • Summarizing daily and weekly master schedules for release through analysis of planned orders vs. production plans to ensure that the master schedule is within the customers' requirement and plant objectives.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • At least 7 years of health and safety generalist experience.
  • A relevant health & safety Diploma or Certificate.
  • Experience working in an Operational or Safety role in an industrial setting, with an advanced working knowledge of applicable and related Occupational Health & Safety legislation and Environmental and Transportation regulations.
  • Proficient in utilizing a wide variety of computer-based applications including the Microsoft Office Suite of programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database systems.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Availability to provide on-call coverage on weekends and during shutdown periods.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented, with excellent interpersonal communication.
  • Qualifications such as the National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Professional (CRSP) are considered an asset.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma
  • SAP
  • French Language at a business-level

Rio Tinto's Strathcona Production Plant is a part of the Atlantic Operations of the Aluminium product group.

Our Alberta facility is focused on results and for 40 years we have been playing a part of the global aluminum industry. This facility is responsible for turning byproduct from oil refineries into key ingredients for one of our widely used metals. High quality green petroleum coke (GPC) is purchased from our partners and turned it into anode grade calcined coke for use in the aluminum smelting process.
