Days/Hours of Work: Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 (37.5 hours per week). Weekend and evening availability may be required.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of People & Culture, the Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring organizational and site-specific health and safety programs across all Beacon Community Services locations. This role ensures compliance with WorkSafe BC regulations and promotes a safe and healthy environment for employees, volunteers, clients, contractors and visitors. The Health and Safety Advisor provides guidance and training to all levels of leadership and staff. They lead the Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committees in adopting health and safety practices and fostering a culture of safety and wellness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Development and Implementation

  • Develop and maintain health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with WorkSafe BC, licensing bodies, accreditation standards, and other relevant regulations
  • Work with leaders to identify and implement site or program-specific health and safety supports and practices
  • Coordinate training programs for employees, ensuring awareness of health and safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and injury prevention
  • Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Conduct and document regular emergency preparedness and evacuation drills

JOHS Committee Leadership

  • Lead multi-site JOHS Committees, organizing meetings, preparing agendas, and ensuring compliance with committee requirements
  • Support committee members in identifying safety concerns and developing actionable recommendations
  • Liaise with WorkSafe BC and Unions to guide committee operations

Incident Management and Investigations

  • Lead investigations into workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and ensure timely reporting to WorkSafe BC
  • Collaborate with leaders to implement post-incident improvement plans

WorkSafe BC Claims Management

  • Manage WorkSafe BC claims, ensuring timely and accurate submission of required documentation
  • Act as the primary employer contact with WorkSafe BC, providing necessary information and guidance on claims and related incidents
  • Coordinate return-to-work programs and provide guidance on short- and long-term disability leave management, in collaboration with Human Resources, benefits providers, and healthcare professionals

Employee Engagement and Support

  • Promote employee involvement in health and safety initiatives, including wellness programs and hazard identification
  • Provide support and guidance to employees and supervisors on safety concerns or issues

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure organizational compliance with WorkSafe BC, licensing requirements and other applicable regulations
  • Prepare regular health and safety reports for management, highlighting trends, key metrics, and areas for improvement
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes, recommending updates to policies and procedures as needed

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Occupational Health and Safety certification (e.g., CRSP, CHSC) or working towards certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably in a multi-site, health or human services organization
  • Experience with WorkSafe BC claims management and worksite investigation processes
  • Training and/or experience in ergonomics and the prevention of psychological and musculoskeletal injuries is preferred
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Valid class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle to travel between sites

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to interpret and apply Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, Workers Compensation Act, collective agreements and related legislation.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage employees at all levels.
  • A keen interest in health and wellness
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in operational risk management, incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and incident reporting software.
  • Comfortable working with vulnerable populations
