MERE HR & Business Consulting Inc. is working with our client, a long-established and respected food manufacturing organization located in Markham, Ontario, to recruit an experienced HR Generalist to join their team.
Our client operates in the food production and manufacturing sector, supporting the development and production of high-quality food products for the Canadian marketplace. The Role
The HR Generalist will support a broad range of human resources functions, with a strong focus on full-cycle recruitment, health and safety, training, policy development, employee relations, onboarding, performance management, and HR compliance.
The successful candidate must have previous and strong working experience managing full-cycle recruitment, from job posting and sourcing through to interviewing, offers, onboarding, and new hire integration. In addition, the candidate must bring a solid understanding of workplace health and safety, training coordination, and policy creation within a practical business environment. This role requires someone who is hands-on, approachable, organized, and confident working directly with employees, supervisors, and management. The ideal candidate will be comfortable supporting both office and production employees while maintaining strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities Lead and support full-cycle recruitment activities, including job postings, candidate sourcing, resume screening, interviews, reference checks, offer preparation, onboarding, and new hire follow-up. Partner with managers and supervisors to understand staffing needs and ensure timely recruitment support. Assist with employee orientation and ensure new hires are properly introduced to company policies, procedures, health and safety expectations, and workplace standards. Support and help strengthen the company’s health and safety program, including safety documentation, incident reporting, workplace inspections, return-to-work coordination, and general compliance support. Assist with the development, review, and implementation of HR policies, workplace procedures, employee communications, and company standards. Coordinate and track employee training, including onboarding training, health and safety training, compliance training, and other workplace learning initiatives. Provide day-to-day HR support to employees and supervisors on workplace questions, employee relations, performance, attendance, and policy matters. Support employee relations matters, including coaching, documentation, investigations, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline. Assist with attendance management, performance management, and documentation processes. Maintain accurate employee records, training files, recruitment files, policy acknowledgements, and HR documentation. Support compliance with Ontario employment legislation, workplace policies, health and safety requirements, and company procedures. Work closely with management to support a positive, respectful, safe, and productive workplace culture. Perform other HR-related duties as required.
Qualifications Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. Minimum 3 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a manufacturing, food production, warehouse, logistics, or similar environment. Must have strong previous experience and excellent working knowledge of full-cycle recruitment. Must have a solid understanding and practical background in workplace health and safety. Must have experience supporting employee training, onboarding, and training documentation. Must have experience assisting with the creation, review, implementation, and communication of workplace policies and procedures. Strong working knowledge of Ontario employment legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Human Rights Code. Experience with recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, documentation, policy administration, and HR compliance. Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy workplace environment. Comfortable working in an in-person, hands-on manufacturing or operational setting. CHRP or working toward a CHRP designation is considered an asset. Experience in a food manufacturing, unionized, or production environment is considered an asset.
