The Role

As a key member of the HR Technology team, the HR System Business Analyst will play a critical role in advancing HR technology priorities, proving day to day HRIS support, work on key HR systems projects and process improvement initiatives. This position will have primary accountability to support, maintain, and optimize the university’s core HR Mosaic (PeopleSoft) ERP environment, with a strong emphasis on the HR related modules, including assessing, configuring, and implementing new functionality due to system upgrade, collective agreement implementation, policy and process updates or projects. The incumbent will also assess current system capabilities, identify opportunities for improvement, and lead the configuration, testing, and implementation of new functionality within PeopleSoft. This includes supporting strategic initiatives related to employee lifecycle administration, payroll processing, pension and benefits administration, self-service modernization, workflow automation, and university’s collective agreements or legislative compliance.

The successful candidate will excel at translating HR operational needs into functional specifications and working closely with technical teams, and stakeholders to deliver practical and scalable solutions. Experience prototyping and demonstrating new features within PeopleSoft, including Fluid and self-service capabilities, is considered a strong asset. Experience in a higher education or unionized environment would be beneficial.

In a collaborative team environment, which embraces the values of teamwork, respect, accountability, inclusiveness, and service, the HR System Business Analyst will:

  • Provide subject matter expertise in HRIS systems, with deep knowledge of PeopleSoft modules including Core HR, Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time and Labour, Absence Management, Recruiting, Employee Self-Service, and Manager Self-Service.

  • Lead functional design, configuration, testing, and implementation of system enhancements across HR, payroll, and benefits processes.

  • Support payroll and benefits operational priorities by improving automation, controls, integrations, reconciliation processes, and data accuracy.

  • Assess and recommend opportunities to modernize HR and payroll workflows through delivered functionality, Fluid pages, approvals, and self-service features.

  • Work closely with HR Operations, Payroll Services, Pension & Benefits, Finance, and IT teams to gather requirements and translate business needs into functional solutions.

  • Lead business process reviews using interviews, workshops, document analysis, use cases, workflow mapping, and root cause analysis.

  • Develop functional specifications, test plans, business cases, training materials, and process documentation.

  • Coordinate and execute testing in non-production environments, including system integration testing and user acceptance testing.

  • Act as liaison between business stakeholders, technical development teams, and third-party vendors.

  • Analyze and implement legislative, policy, and collective agreement changes for impacts to HR, payroll, and benefits systems configuration and processes.

  • Deliver training, user guidance, knowledge base and change management support for new system functionality.

The successful applicant will bring extensive experience working with business stakeholders, enterprise systems, and operational processes, while actively contributing to the transformation of HR, payroll, and benefits services through technology-enabled people solutions. The ultimate objective of this role is to reduce manual administration, strengthen compliance and controls, improve employee experience, and enhance institutional service delivery towards operational excellence.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Business, HR, Information Systems, or a related discipline

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience as Business Analyst or System Analyst supporting HRIS environment

  • Strong hands-on functional experience with PeopleSoft, particularly HR, Payroll, and Benefits Administration, and Time and Attendance, Absences module..

  • Demonstrated understanding of HR, payroll operations, benefits eligibility and enrollments, pension administration concepts, HR data structures, and employee lifecycle processes.

  • Experience supporting system upgrades, patches, regulatory changes, year-end processing, or major system enhancements.

  • Strong knowledge of business analysis methodologies including current state/future state assessments, fit-gap analysis, process re-engineering, and requirements gathering.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 Suite, Sharepoint, Visio, powerpoint presentations., and ticketing/project tools such as Jira or Dynamics CRM

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Assets include certifications such as Lean Six Sigma, CCBA, CBAP, PMP, or vendor certifications related to Oracle / PeopleSoft

The posted hiring range represents McMaster's typical hiring range for this position. Actual starting salary will depend on factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions.

Individuals with extensive experience, deep specialized expertise, and/or those who can demonstrate exceptional past performance, as applicable, may be hired at a higher rate within the full range, in accordance with the University compensation policies.
