We are very excited to be on the search for a passionate HR professional to join our growing SMI Family.  SMI is looking to fill a newly created, permanent, full-time position of Manager, Human Resources (HR). Reporting to the Vice President Human Resources & Chief Compliance Officer, the successful candidate will be accountable for managing all functions of the HR department and providing human resource expertise, guidance, advice and support to improve engagement, retain top talent, add value to the business and positively influence business outcomes.  The Manager, HR serves as a member of the management team, provides leadership coaching and direction to staff, and contributes to the development of corporate strategy and future planning.

As Manager, Human Resources YOU Will Be Responsible For:

  • Providing clear leadership and direction; managing the operations of the human resources and payroll and benefits area and monitoring key performance metrics.
  • Enhancing the company's human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations and human resource policies, programs and practices.
  • Enforcing management guidelines by preparing, maintaining, recommending and ensuring compliance with human resource policies and procedures; Advising other management on interpretation and administration of human resource policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions.
  • Establishing a recruitment, assessment and interview program; coaching managers on candidate selection; conducting and analyzing exit interviews; and recommending changes.
  • Establishing and conducting orientation and training programs.
  • Managing compensation by conducting periodic salary surveys; scheduling and conducting job evaluations; monitoring and scheduling individual pay actions; and recommending, planning, and implementing pay structure revisions.
  • Implementing employee benefits programs by studying and assessing benefit needs and trends; recommending benefit programs to the VP, Human Resources; directing the processing of benefit claims; and designing and conducting education programs on benefit programs.
  • Ensuring planning, monitoring and appraisal of employee work results by training managers to coach and discipline employees; scheduling management conferences with employees; hearing and resolving employee grievances; and counselling employees and supervisors.
  • Ensuring legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource legislative requirements, conducting investigations, maintaining records, and representing the organization at hearings.
  • Managing labour relations issues including grievance/dispute resolution, interpretation and application of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and all disciplinary matters, and participating in collective bargaining with the Union.
  • Managing human resource records by designing a filing and retrieval system and keeping past and current records.
  • Managing human resource staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training new employees.

What We Need From YOU!

  • a post secondary degree or diploma from a recognized business course with a concentration in human resources
  • minimum five years human resources experience
  • minimum three years managing in a unionized workplace
  • a commitment to ongoing professional development

  • a passion to develop and maintain positive relationships with individuals at all position levels and to help foster a positive and inclusive corporate culture
  • ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • experience in strategic planning
  • ability to lead and facilitate group meetings and deliver presentations
  • ability to make recommendations and decisions considering legislation, personal as well as organizational factors
