Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, SHE, the Specialist, Safety, Health & Environment is an integral part of the EHS team and will provide support for the development, implementation and hands-on execution of the Health, Safety and Environmental Programs. A leader with highly visible an interactive hands style with employee stakeholders to ensure employee accountability and engagement while demonstrating our organizational values.

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as an environmental and occupational health and safety subject matter expert with strong knowledge of relevant legislation: Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, Environmental Protection Act, TDG, WHMIS and WSIB.
  • Accountable for developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety incident prevention programs based on continuous improvement principles and chemical industry standards. This includes the key program lead role for sustaining the Process Hazard Analysis and HAZOP program.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative occupational health and safety assessments including: Job Hazard Analysis, Physical Demands Analysis, Noise, Indoor Air Quality using accepted industry assessment standards, instruments and methods.
  • Assist in WSIB Claims management as well as assist in the work reintegration program and liaise with 3rd party agencies including physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinics to assist in pre-employment placement assessments.
  • Develop, review and revise health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure adherence to all applicable legislative regulations, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods, WHMIS, the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Participate in the development, delivery and implementation of training programs and delivery modes (e.g. Safety Talks, Posted Materials, On-Line/In Person Training) in compliance with MLTSD regulations and recognized health and safety standards.
  • Act as a lead in the investigation of workplace environmental, health and safety incidents to ensure quality of root cause analysis and the effective identification and implementation of corrective actions; offer practical recommendations to mitigate risk; train front line staff on effective incident investigation techniques and principles; monitor and report on monthly KPIs.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education & Experience
    • Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in chemical, industrial or environmental engineering, safety engineering, kinesiology, occupational health/hygiene or related field with an emphasis on ergonomics.
    • 5 years of related environmental, health and safety experience in chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
    • CRSP or equivalent/related safety designation (CIH, ROH, ROHT, CHSC, CCPE).
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge and experience developing health and safety policies and procedures, and all relevant legislation such as WHMIS, TDG, WSIB, and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
    • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
    • Proficient computer skills, particularly MS Office application such as Word, Excel, Power-point.
    • Ability to work with all levels of internal management and staff.
    • Ability and willingness to work flexible schedule based on Operational needs.
