Position: People & Labour Relations Generalist

Department: People

Reports to: Director, People


The People & LR Generalist provides first line support to employees and managers of Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE) and will be responsible for various HR programs and initiatives. This role will oversee recruitment strategies for hourly employees of CSE and CSE’s sister company, Toptable Group (TT), and will assist with labour and employee relations issues as well as various proactive people initiatives for both CSE and TT.

A typical day includes:

  • Providing first line HR Support to CSE employees and advising CSE and TT managers on HR related issues
  • Taking a proactive lead to explore and execute innovative recruitment strategies to facilitate recruitment of best-in-class event staff for Rogers Arena and hourly Toptable employees
  • In collaboration with the Director, People and VP, People, administering the collective agreement and other labour statutes, providing employee and labour relations guidance to managers, and assisting Director, People with fact gathering on various LR issues
  • Handling first step employee grievances and collaborating with Director, People on investigations and/or independently conduct investigations, as required
  • Developing a collaborative relationship with the Union and taking a proactive approach to issue resolution
  • Assisting in the preparation and delivery of corporate orientation and other training programs
  • Assisting members of the People team and department managers to develop programs and plans that will enhance the employee experience for both FT and PT employee groups
  • Leading the ongoing execution of employee recognition and engagement plans and programs for employees across all departments (e.g., FT Length of Service Program, PT Supervisor Awards Dinner, Fan Mail program etc.)
  • Assisting in the enhancement and continued growth of employee communication opportunities for event staff, such as the Event Staff Blog, keeping it current and fresh with ongoing postings
  • Suggesting and executing programs to support overall employee satisfaction mandates
  • Assisting in the coordination of employee surveys and coordinate subsequent action plans, as required
  • Working event nights at Rogers Arena to engage with staff and managers to build collaborative relationships
  • Drafting employment agreements as required
  • Overseeing special projects, as required

  • 3-5 years’ generalist experience in a unionized workplace, with a Certificate or Diploma in a human resources related program, or a combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a labour relations role in a similar unionized environment with an understanding of interpreting and administering a collective agreement
  • Demonstrated experience thoroughly investigating disciplinary incidents and effectively bringing to resolution
  • Demonstrated experience introducing creative ideas for recruiting staff in a challenging labour market
  • An exceptional customer-first service orientation
  • Attention to detail with exceptional organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for a high energy, fast-paced work environment
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required


  • Experience with HRIS systems and a strong aptitude for HR database concepts
