This position will act as our workplace safety champion and assist the health and safety team in encouraging employees to participate in Technical Safety BC’s integrated safety system. Principal Accountabilities:

  • Acts as an expert information resource to Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees, employees, and leaders, in the interpretation and application of internal safety standards, and external OHS regulations; including subject matters where situations are unique, complex or involve potentially higher risk.
  • Develops, health and safety policies, and safe work procedures in consultation with management, including protocols for OHS audits and safety inspections.
  • Monitor changes in internal and external environments making recommendations for improvement to address any new/emerging OHS hazard exposures. Assesses impacts and ensures compliance with existing safety practices and standards.
  • Conducts ergonomic workplace assessments and arranges accommodation where medically supported.
  • Participates as a member of First Aid and emergency response teams.
  • Conducts OHS incident investigations, reports on findings, including causal factors and corrective actions.
  • Oversees the violence prevention program, conducts violence threat risk assessments and leads implementation of risk mitigation and security enhancements.
  • Assists HR leadership team with return to work program and WCB claims management.
  • Provides detailed safety requirements/ learning needs to support the design and facilitates delivery of select OHS hazard-specific training.
  • May lead or support project initiatives and research activities within the Health and Safety department.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • Requires a trade certification, OHS Diploma or a degree in Science, Social Sciences or related discipline plus 3-5 years’ experience in a health and safety role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (CRSP/CHSC is an asset.)
  • In depth knowledge of provincial, federal and municipal OHS regulation and safety standards. (including WHIMIS and Transport of Dangerous goods legislation).
  • Proven ability to think critically, trouble shoot and problem-solve independently.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills including flexibility to respond to changing priorities.
  • Superior communication skills, creativity, judgement, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Builds strong cross-functional relations between other departments with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate a solution-oriented approach
  • Capable of working independently with the ability to prioritize initiatives.
  • Proficient in software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and procurement programs.
  • Valid driver’s license is required given travel throughout BC.
