The Position

We are currently looking for an Accounting Generalist.

  • Not your typical accounting office - we are hybrid, paperless, tech savvy!
  • Headcount is growing rapidly, meaning there are constant updates and changes within the org
  • Autonomy: You will manage the preparation, distribution, and reporting of payroll information, including preparing account reconciliations, lead the year-end process for reporting and filing of tax forms and government filing, and support internal and external audits. You will also interact with department heads in setting their annual budgets as well as reviewing on a regular basis with such
  • Accountability: Research, recommend and implement new or enhanced policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness that support business needs
  • Working closely with Finance, and People & Culture to develop and improve controls around payroll processing, secure data validation and system interfaces.

60% of the role:

  • Serve as the FP&A manager for all things personnel related and interact with finance department on projects and continuous improvements to processes

40% of the role:

  • Serve as the payroll subject matter expert for Canada (90%), the US, and other countries

Key Responsibilities

60% FP&A:

  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial analytics via variance and trend analysis
  • Interpretation of key metrics and KPIs to assist with decision making
  • Support performa planning and forecasting
  • Securities analysis out of applicable software
  • Budgeting and planning for personnel growth with various department heads
  • Develops and maintains financial controls and procedures
  • Maintaining employee records in FP&A software

40% Payroll:

  • Prepare accurate and timely semi monthly payroll for all hourly and salaried Canadian, US, and Global employees via Payworks, Deel, and other softwares
  • Assistance with annual filings (EBC: Eligible Business Corporation, SRED: Canadian Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Incentive Program) by pulling and analyzing employee data, and government grants, Worksafe BC, BC EHT registrations and filings
  • Questions from Employees regarding deductions and other payroll inquiries
  • RRSP & TFSA matching program management
  • Process and submit ROE forms, year end T4 issuance and other tax forms
  • Ensure compliance with all related federal, state/provincial legislation, and corporate policies as they relate to administration of payroll, including salaries, commissions, bonuses, termination payments, and other special payments.
  • Issuance and maintenance of securities to employees and other stakeholders

*This is a new position to the company, so there is plenty of opportunity to carve out a role specific to your interests and capabilities. As we are a start up, this is a taste of what a day in the life would look like, but we all wear many hats and thus duties can change when necessary.

Key Requirements

  • Role requires the candidate to manage a fast-paced and deadline driven environment
  • Possess a continuous improvement mindset and work to deliver solutions that meet the needs of a fast-paced high-growth company
  • Advanced G Suite and/or Microsoft Excel skills to reconcile and analyze payroll variances and discrepancies and provide detailed reporting & analytics
  • Thorough understanding of the Employment Standards Act and Canadian payroll processes. Including but not limited to: withholding taxes, source deductions, other deductions, benefits, ROE forms, T4 slips and more
  • 1+ years of payroll experience
  • PCP is an asset, but not a requirement (willingness to become certified)
  • Experience using Payworks is an asset, but ability to learn new systems is a must
  • Willingness to learn and research payroll requirements for different countries
  • Ability to multi-task, process high volume of transactions and meet deadlines.
  • Must be meticulous and detail oriented.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting
  • Works well independently as well as within a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to deal effectively with all levels of staff.
