The Role

We are currently recruiting to the role of Senior Manager, Health, Safety, and Environmental (Sr. Manager, HSE) to be based in our Calgary or Edmonton office. The Sr. Manager, HSE is accountable for the implementation and management of the HSE Management System for Shawcor Global operations. This role oversees multiple facilities subject to multiple legislative, legal and regulatory requirements in different countries. The Sr. Manager, HSE ensures compliance with all associated corporate policies/procedures as well as any legislated jurisdictional requirements. In addition, the incumbent shall drive HSE risk reduction, continuous improvement and facilitate a strong and effective HSE culture throughout Shawcor.


HSE Management System

  • Determine HSE goals and strategies for Shawcor and ensure they align with Shawcor values and meet all Canadian and US legislative requirements.
  • Maintain the Shawcor HSE Management System and ensure compliance with all regulatory laws, codes and standards as well as corporate written policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain associated HSE metrics as required within Shawcor and at a corporate level and ensure timely reporting on established deadlines.
  • Manages HSE audits, benchmarking and key performance indicators. As well as, participate in all HSE management system audits including; Shawcor, COR and periodic OH&S inspections and provide audit support to other divisions as required.
  • Drive continuous improvement in all aspects of the management system and ensure timely corrective action of HSE audit findings.
  • Identify HSE resource requirements to effectively deliver HSE programs.
  • Manage all aspects of the Shawcor HSE policies and procedures, including but not limited to, hazard analysis and identification, incident investigation, contractor safety, emergency response, machine guarding, electrical safety, hazardous energy control, confined space, fall protection, incident investigation, bio safety, industrial hygiene programs, and return to work programs.
  • Review and analyze all accident and injury date.
  • Review Field site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures and write reports and recommendations as necessary.
  • Drive the use of risk management tools within Shawcor.
  • Ensure that all high potential risk items receive leadership attention and are mitigated to acceptable levels when identified.
  • Use key indicators through tracking and reporting tools to identify negative risk trends and facilitate corrective actions in a timely manner.

HSE Training & Engagement

  • Ensure that all fundamental HSE related training is managed and up to date as per corporate policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain HSE training matrix for divisional HSE personnel as well as leadership teams.
  • Develop and implement HSE orientation program. Ensure onboarding of new personnel is effective and that all core expectations, policies and procedures are understood.
  • Complete regular plant and field visits to observe, provide mentorship and assess level of HSE culture.
  • Provide regular feedback to subordinate HSE coordinators and people leaders regarding HSE related performance.
  • Support all leadership by way of coaching during safety related incidents, events and communication.
  • Deliver monthly and quarterly statistics to senior management and provide commentary on trends, initiatives and overall HSE culture at divisions,
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives through all aspects of HSE.
  • Promote and Incident and Injury Free (“IIF”) work environment
  • Promote a positive safety culture throughout Shawcor and work closely with operations leadership
  • Direct planning projects aimed at integrating HSE activities in Shawcor operating efforts.

Corporate/Management Liaison

  • Provide technical advice to management on all HSE related issues which may impact business operations. Provide periodic updates on HSE performance to management as requested.
  • Support corporate HSE initiatives and provide necessary divisional resources to implement as required.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on HSE items for Shawcor Sr. Leadership.
  • Prepare and control HSE operating budget.


  • Post-secondary degree in a related field.
  • CSP/CRSP preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in a Health, Safety and Environmental role.
  • Minimum 3 years’ related job experience in a manufacturing environment and a senior supervisory role.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian and US federal and provincial/state legislative, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership in driving a program/system of safety in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to work well with and influence others throughout all levels in the organization.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft office and VelocityEHS (or other EHS management software).
  • Detail- and result-oriented.
  • Strong ability to lead and train others.
  • Safety conscious at and away from work.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel approx. 30% of the time to internal and external sites in Canada and the US.
