The Team

This role will sit in the People & Development function and work closely with the Head of Diversity & Inclusion, the People & Development team, Employee Resource Group Committees and other interdisciplinary departments internally.

Job Overview

This role is critical to the achievement of the firm's diversity and inclusion objectives to advance reconciliation with Indigenous communities and to build greater French speaking capability supporting our diversity and inclusion initiatives in our Montreal and Quebec City offices. The Diversity & Inclusion function at the firm is well developed and has a focus on gender parity, racial equity, LGBTQI2S+ inclusion, disability confidence and also life stages (including parenting transitions, generational diversity and flexible and hybrid working models).

The role is both strategic and operational and the primary focus areas will be to:

  • develop and lead proactive and reactive strategies to advance the firm's Reconciliation action plan in close collaboration with the firm's leadership, Indigenous Relations Employee Resource Group Committee and key internal departments; and
  • to provide support in French for local leadership, People & Development and also Employee Resource Group chapters in Montreal & Quebec to develop their strategic direction, programs and initiatives.

They will also support the Head of Diversity & Inclusion to lead and/or support a range of national initiatives and projects. The ideal candidate will be able to implement both a "top down" and "grassroots" philosophy that engages and seeks input/participation from both firm leadership and firm members broadly, and specifically those from underrepresented communities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Create and lead implementation of the firm's Reconciliation action plan including providing subject matter expertise on corporate Indigenous relations practices, identification of focus areas for the firm and advising relevant departments and the firm's leadership on the strategic direction regarding Indigenous inclusion, employment and retention, education and learning, community outreach etc.
  • Develop close relationships and provide subject matter expertise to the Indigenous Relations employee resource group leadership, People & Development, Procurement, Marketing and Business Development, Pro bono committee and other interdisciplinary groups that can affect and influence Indigenous relations.
  • Collaborate and support the Marketing and Business Development functions with client collaborations on Indigenous relations, reconciliation and inclusion.
  • Implement and manage the three year Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) certification plan as lead project manager for the initiative.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous Relations employee resource group to provide strategic direction and support implementation of programs and initiatives nationally.
  • Work closely with the Head of diversity & inclusion to create new, embed and scale existing centralized programs and initiatives nationally with a particular focus on French speaking firm members.
  • Partner with Employee Resources Groups in Quebec offices (Origins and Pride network) to support their strategic development including supporting the creation and implementation of initiatives and events.
  • Lead the creation & development of new employee resource groups in Quebec offices.
  • Plan and execute internal events and workshops including client events as well as national internal events and campaigns.
  • Contribute to the library of diversity and inclusion content including creating new resources, guides and content in French, contributing to accredited training session content and adapting existing English content.
  • Analyze data and create reports related to progress made with our diversity and inclusion targets, KPIs and impact of our strategies.

Qualification and Skills Required

  • Minimum 1-3 years' experience and in-depth understanding of corporate indigenous reconciliation principles, strategies, policies and procedures as they relate to reconciliation and engagement, with experience having worked in the field of diversity inclusion, coupled with a Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience within a professional services environment is preferred but not necessary.
  • Bilingualism is essential.
  • Exceptional writing skills along with strong presentation and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who self-identify as having Indigenous heritage (e.g. First Nations, Metis or Inuit).
  • Knowledge of the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, treaties and relevant case law, and the regulatory process as it pertains to Indigenous engagement. Preference will be given to candidates with experiential knowledge of Indigenous peoples, culture and history.
  • Ability to connect and promote collaborative engagement with a variety of Indigenous communities, organizations, and interests in a culturally appropriate way.
  • Demonstrated experience as a relationship builder and trusted liaison, by demonstrating integrity and being authentic, collaborative, inclusive, and a creative problem solver.
  • High-level strategic thinking combined with attention to detail in executing programs.
  • A self-starter who can work autonomously and is proactive in developing ideas and solutions.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Powerful interpersonal skills; experience in a relationship-based position that requires engaging with many stakeholders and requires effective communication skills to influence outcomes.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when managing conflicts.
