SUMMARY OF HIRINGS AND DISMISSALS – FEBRUARY 2020

Here is a summary of the companies where jobs were created and others were lost in February 2020.

HIRINGS

The fast-growing Dayforce software allows the Ceridian company to hire 400 people in 2020. Over the next five years, the number of new jobs will increase to 2,000 and these will be distributed in several of their offices, therefore those of Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa

The American giant Google will open new offices in Canada by 2022. This expansion will create nearly 5,000 new jobs, including 800 in Montreal. Note that the new offices on rue Viger will replace the facilities already in use.

The transfer of operations from Lolë to Wiptec allows this Sherbrooke company to create 25 new jobs. However, this transfer does not affect Wiptec’s future facilities in Montreal, which will create no less than 1,000 new jobs.

A $ 15 million investment from the Government of Canada is helping Bioindustrial Innovation Canada create 600 new jobs in Sarnia, Ontario. This contribution will be used for the integration of new green and sustainable technologies.

Specializing in the manufacture of tubes for aircraft, Lauak Canada has announced the creation of a hundred new jobs at its Mirabel plant. To do so, the company will invest nearly $ 37 million more than the $ 3 million granted by the federal government. Acquired in 2018, the Quebec factory has already created around 20 jobs.

 

DISMISSALS

After a difficult year for the cannabis industry, Aurora Cannabis has announced the elimination of 500 positions. Tilray and Supreme Cannabis Company announced that they have thanked 10% to 15% of their workforce for cutting costs. Some analysts warn that the coming months will lead to even more dramatic staff cuts and changes in management.

The Minister of Education of Quebec, Jean-François Roberge, passed Bill 40 under a gag on the night of February 7 to 8, 2020. The result: 700 elected officials and school trustees lost their jobs overnight. This change has enabled the Quebec government to save $ 45 million over the next four years.

Quebec-based food giant Saputo will close two factories by January 2021, one in Ontario and one in New Brunswick.
